Lost Egypt

The 5th graders were able to do hands on activites to learn. They built a pyramid, put the shrads back together to make a pot, identified kinds of bones in an archaeologist dig, stood on a humungous map of Egypt, and did many interatctive screens. Then they read about and saw artifacts from Egypt. They were able to see Annie, named for an anonymous mummy and her coffin. She was found floating in the Nile River and mummified. They were able to read about he steps to creating a mummy.

Some of the 5th graders were able to watch Meteorologist Brett McIntyre give his weather forecast. Other lucky ones were even on the news with him during a brief weather clip.

Hands-On Activites at SCI

The 5th graders used their minds and hands while they made and launched rockets, built lego cars and raced them, padded an egg to be dropped, built with dominos, built an arch, and created dams with water to make power.

Fire and Ice

The 5th graders were entertained , intrigued, and educated by the Fire and Ice program which explored extremely cold and hot temperatues. They say a solid, dry ice, turn from a solid to a vapor which is sublimation. A penny became bendable from extreme cold. Then a balloon's air molecules contracted so much, it looked like there wasn't any air in the balloon when it got extremely cold, but it expanded back out to regular balloon size when the air warmed up inside of it to room temperature. In the picture, the students are seeing an explosion made with hydrogen in a ballon. When salt was added it created color similiar to fireworks.

Creating Mummies

Electricity Activities

The 5th graders spent several science class periods doing electricity activities. They completed electric circuits and added switches to open and close the circuits. Then they tested objects to see if they were conductors or insulators. Plus, they made series and parallel circuits. These scientists were able to see first hand that the lights were dimmer in a series circuit than in a parallel circuit. Also if one light went out, they all did in a series circuit, but not in a parallel circuit.

Human Body Final Projects

In December the students worked in small groups to create a life size human body for their final body systems project. They had to draw and label the organs in the major body systems. Also, each student researched an organ that they were interested in learning more about. Then they created a "Wanted" poster that included its picture and description.

Motion Experiments in Science

The fifth graders have been doing many experiments in science to learn about motion and force. They have had to calculate the speed of a car by measuring the distance it traveled divided by the time it took in seconds. They conducted experiments to find out how friction, mass, and force affect the distance cars travel down a ramp. They were able to see Newton's 3rd law in action when they made rockets by attaching a balloon to a straw that went through a string. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Staff Sergeant Chris Grady

Staff Sergeant Chris Grady visited with the 5th graders on Veteran's Day. He is in the Army Reserve and spent one year in Afganistan. He explained life in Afganistan while showing many pictures. Plus he brought several items such as his helmet, scarves, hats, and blankets to share with the students. The students enjoyed listening to this veteran's experiences in Afganistan. Thanks for serving our county.

Veteran's Day

All of the 5th graders created flags in tribute of Veteran's Day. The students were very creative. There were flags made from a boot, clock, basketball, scooter, wood, planter, Christmas lights, posters, and many other materials.

Weather Instruments

Mrs. Klocke's section created weather instruments. They made thermometers, rain gauges, baraometers, wind vanes, and anemometers. Keep watching and discussing the weather with your child.

D.A.R.E.

D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It is also an acronym for a decision making model.

We learned several ways to Take Charge in a positive way. They are to walk away, say no, strength in numbers, avoid the situation, skipping CD, use humor, and change the subject. We also learned how different kinds of drugs such as tobacco, beer, liquor, inhalants, and marijuana can harm our body and others. We talked a lot about bullying and how to handle a situation if we are bullied or see someone being bullied.

Rollerskating in P.E.

A big thank you to Mr. Schultz for planning our rollerskating unit. It was so much fun. I truly believe rollerskating is a life long skill the students can use. It is a great way for them to get exercise; and boy, were they ever hot and sweaty after each day of rollerskating. I even got into the adventure and rollerskated with them for a while on their last day.

Field Trip to Des Moines

On March 29, the 5th graders boarded the bus to Des Moines. First, the visited the Iowa Hall of Pride. They watched a short video showcasing the great opportunities for people in Iowa. Then the students went on a scavenger hunt in groups to find information and famous Iowans in the Hall of Pride. Students also did activities such as walked on a treadmill, announced a game like a broadcaster, sang songs, and played virtual basketball. Many of the students favorite part was the game room. Every student received tokens and could play games such as electronic jumproping, basketball, football throw, soccer, hockey, and dancing.

They ended their day at the Civic Center watching Freedom Train. They were mesmerized by the singing and storyline of Harriet Tubman's life.
